In a boost for the country’s aviation sector, Velana International Airport has just opened its new fuel farm. This modern facility is set to improve how the airport stores fuel and make operations smoother all around.
The new fuel farm, inaugurated by President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu, boasts an impressive storage capacity of 45 million liters of jet fuel, a substantial increase from the previous 13 million liters. Additionally, the facility will also store 1 million liters of diesel and 100,000 liters of petrol, catering to the diverse fuel needs of the airport.
“This new fuel farm is a game-changer for Velana International Airport,” said Ibrahim Sharif, the CEO and Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). “It will allow us to refuel up to seven vessels simultaneously, significantly reducing the time required for aircraft refueling and improving overall operational efficiency.”
The inauguration ceremony was attended by government officials, MACL representatives, and airline representatives.
The new fuel farm replaces the previous system, which utilized two 60,000-liter tanker truck, and is capable of refueling an aircraft in just 45 minutes, a substantial improvement from the past.
This expansion of the fuel farm is a strategic investment by the government, aimed at addressing the growing needs of the country’s aviation sector. The increased fuel storage and streamlined refueling process are expected to contribute to the airport’s operational capabilities.
