President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that a major power project agreement signed will bring a long‑term solution to Addu City’s electricity shortages, resolving the issue for the next two decades.
The announcement was made during the launch of “The Greater Addu Vision”, where the President said the most persistent challenge facing Addu has been the unreliable electricity supply. He said finding a permanent fix was one of his top priorities upon taking office.
Under the agreement, Addu City will receive an additional 26 MW of power, with the project scheduled for completion by July next year. “This agreement signed today will solve the electricity problem in Addu for the next 20 years,” the President said.
The contract was awarded to Definite Solutions of Dubai at a ceremony organised by the FENAKA Corporation. FENAKA Managing Director Mohamed Najjah signed on behalf of the corporation, while Definite Solutions Founder and CEO Abdullah Saeed signed on behalf of the company. The USD 31 million project will install Belgian‑made ABC low‑speed engines in Addu.
A previous contract for a new power plant in Addu had been awarded to China’s Dongfang Company.
The President urged the public not to elect individuals who would obstruct development projects. He also called on councils not to misuse powers granted under the Decentralisation Act to block government developmental initiatives.
