The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) unveiled two next‑generation Advanced Armoured Platforms in Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra, on Saturday. The platforms, developed by the Vehicles Research and Development Establishment, aim to meet emerging operational requirements of the Indian Armed Forces. Dr Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of Defence (R&D) and Chairman of DRDO, led the unveiling.
Both platforms—tracked and wheeled—feature an indigenously designed 30 mm crewless turret. The system integrates advanced firepower, mobility and protection features. The turret includes a 7.62 mm PKT gun and is configured to launch Anti‑Tank Guided Missiles. Officials state that the platforms offer high power‑to‑weight ratios, improved speed, automatic transmission and enhanced obstacle‑negotiation capability.
The vehicles provide STANAG Level 4 and Level 5 protection with modular ballistic and blast shielding. Amphibious capability has been strengthened through hydro‑jet systems, allowing improved water‑obstacle crossing. The base design supports multiple mission configurations, enabling future variants for different battlefield roles.
Indigenous content currently stands at 65 per cent, with plans to increase it to 90 per cent. Manufacturing has been carried out by Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Bharat Forge Limited, supported by several MSMEs. Officials describe the collaboration as a boost to India’s defence‑industrial ecosystem.
Senior DRDO scientists, industry leaders and representatives from multiple defence laboratories attended the event. The platforms form part of India’s wider effort to modernise armoured capabilities and strengthen self‑reliance in defence technology.
