MUMBAI — Reliance Industries, one of India’s largest conglomerates, is developing a large-scale data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, expanding its footprint beyond oil refining and petrochemicals into the growing digital infrastructure sector.
The facility, led by Reliance Jio Infocomm, will be powered primarily by renewable energy, drawing from the company’s solar, wind, and green hydrogen projects. Akash Ambani, CEO of Reliance Jio and son of Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani, said the project is expected to be completed within 24 months.
Jamnagar, already home to Reliance’s massive oil refining complex, is set to become a strategic hub for the company’s digital ambitions. The move aligns with India’s broader energy transition, with renewable sources now making up approximately 47 percent of the country’s total installed power capacity, according to the Economic Survey for 2024-25.
Founded in 1966 by Dhirubhai Ambani as a textile business, Reliance has since evolved into a diversified industrial giant. Following Dhirubhai’s death in 2002, Mukesh Ambani led the company’s expansion into telecom, digital services, and now, data infrastructure—positioning Reliance as a key player in India’s digital economy.
