ICE Tactics Under Fire After U.S. Citizen Pulled From Car in Chicago

The confrontation unfolded late last week on Chicago’s West Side, where ICE officers stopped a vehicle they said was linked to an ongoing investigation. In footage recorded by bystanders, agents can be seen smashing a car window and dragging the driver onto the street. The man, later confirmed by his attorney to be a U.S. citizen, was briefly detained before being released without charges.

The video, which spread rapidly across social media platforms, shows the driver protesting his innocence as agents force him to the ground. Witnesses can be heard shouting at officers, accusing them of excessive force.

ICE officials defended the operation, saying agents acted “in accordance with safety protocols” after the driver allegedly refused to comply with orders. The agency did not explain why the man was targeted or why he was released shortly afterward.

Chicago police, who were not directly involved in the stop, said they are reviewing the incident. City officials, including members of the mayor’s office, have called for a federal inquiry.

Civil rights groups condemned the episode as emblematic of what they describe as ICE’s unchecked authority. “This is not just a mistake—it’s a violation of basic rights,” said one Chicago-based immigrant advocacy leader. “If a U.S. citizen can be treated this way, no one is safe from abuse.”

The American Civil Liberties Union urged Congress to investigate, while local community organizations announced plans for protests outside ICE’s Chicago field office.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions over immigration enforcement in major U.S. cities. Chicago, which has long identified as a “sanctuary city,” has clashed repeatedly with federal authorities over detention practices and cooperation with ICE.

Legal experts note that while ICE has broad powers to detain non-citizens, the mistaken detention of a U.S. citizen raises serious constitutional questions. “This is precisely the kind of overreach the courts have warned against,” said a professor of constitutional law at Northwestern University.

The Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general has been urged to open an investigation. Lawmakers from Illinois have also demanded answers, with some calling for limits on ICE’s operational authority in urban areas.

For now, the video remains a flashpoint in the national conversation over immigration enforcement, civil liberties, and the balance between security and individual rights. As one Chicago alderman put it, “This isn’t just about one man in one car. It’s about the kind of country we want to be.”
