Germany said on 22 April that it expects to finalise a major submarine cooperation agreement with India within the next three months. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius made the statement in Kiel after meeting Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
The planned agreement is valued at $8 billion. It will support joint submarine production between German company Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and India’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders. The project has been under negotiation for several months as part of India’s plan to expand domestic defence manufacturing.
Pistorius said he is “very, very confident” that the agreement will be ready for signing soon. He stated that both sides aim to complete the process within the next quarter.
The cooperation will strengthen defence ties between Germany and India. It will also support India’s long‑term naval modernisation programme and its effort to increase submarine production under the strategic partnership model.
Germany views the project as an opportunity to deepen engagement in the Indo‑Pacific and expand industrial collaboration with India. Both countries have increased defence cooperation in recent years through high‑level visits, joint exercises and technology partnerships.
