MALÉ, Maldives – First Lady Sajida Mohammed urged voters to elect local officials who will work in step with the government of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, telling supporters that councils must be aligned with a president she described as working tirelessly for the public.

Speaking at the opening of a campaign booth for the PNC candidates in Maafannu South, Sajida drew on her years living in the neighborhood. She reminded residents of the changes they had witnessed in the area and said they would remember who had addressed long standing concerns, including improvements made when President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu served as housing minister and later as mayor.

Voters, she said, should choose councillors, Women’s Development Committee members and mayors who are prepared to cooperate with the administration. According to her, electing officials who enter office with the intention of opposing the government would bring no benefit to the public.

Sajida also pointed to the government’s efforts to address socio economic challenges in the country, saying the president had taken difficult decisions to confront those issues. She warned that if councils were filled with people unwilling to support the administration, the consequences would be felt by citizens.

Councils, she said, are the institutions closest to the public and best positioned to understand local needs. For that reason, she argued, voters should choose representatives who can convey those concerns directly to the government.

Sajida also invoked the legacy of Congress candidate for mayor Moosa Ali Jalil, recalling his actions on November 3, 1988. She described him as someone whose sacrifice reflected deep love for the country and said such commitment should be recognized.

She closed her remarks by appealing not only to Congress supporters but also to independents and members of rival parties, urging them to back Congress candidates in the upcoming local council elections.
