In a strong lift-off for the aviation sector, India’s domestic air passenger traffic soared to new heights in 2025, with early data suggesting a robust 14.5% year-on-year growth in January alone, reaching 150.3 lakh passengers. This marks a solid 18% jump above pre-COVID levels, showcasing the resilience and rising demand in Indian skies. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) shared these promising figures, pointing to a bright year ahead.

The year 2024 closed with domestic passenger volumes nearing 164-170 million, as projected by industry estimates, a significant leap from 15.20 crore in 2023. January 2025’s impressive numbers signal that this upward trend is holding strong, with the industry eyeing a 7-10% growth for FY25. The surge reflects growing confidence in air travel and India’s push to become a global aviation hub.

IndiGo: Still the Sky King
IndiGo continues to rule the roost, holding a commanding market share—estimated at over 62% based on recent trends. In November 2024, it flew a record-breaking 10 million passengers in a single month, and early 2025 data suggests it’s on track to carry even more, cementing its status as India’s top choice for affordable travel.

Air India: A Rising Star
After its merger with Vistara in November 2024, Air India has hit the ground running, carrying over 3.47 million passengers in that month alone. With a market share hovering around 27% in late 2024, the airline’s expanded fleet and new Airbus orders (100 more jets added in December 2024) signal big ambitions for 2025.

Tata’s Air India Express: Low-Cost Gains
The Tata Group’s low-cost arm, Air India Express (merged with AIX Connect), is making waves too. It served a growing chunk of passengers—around 4.4% market share in late 2024—and is expected to keep climbing in 2025 as it taps into the budget travel boom.

Akasa Air: Steady Climb
Akasa Air, the young carrier, carried 5.92 lakh passengers in August 2024 and hit its best month yet in November with rising numbers. With a 4.5% market share and a fresh order of 150 Boeing 737 MAX jets, it’s steadily carving out its space in 2025.

SpiceJet: Fighting to Bounce Back
SpiceJet, despite financial hurdles, raised Rs 3,000 crore in 2024 to steady its wings. Its market share dipped to 2.3% in August 2024, but with renewed funding, it’s aiming to regain altitude in 2025, having flown over 3 lakh passengers in that month.

On-Time Wins and Passenger Feedback

Punctuality remains a key battleground. Akasa Air topped the charts in August 2024 with a 71.2% on-time performance across major metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru. IndiGo and Air India followed closely at around 66% each in the same period, with more data awaited for 2025. On the flip side, SpiceJet faced the most passenger complaints in 2023 (422 out of 712), though recent efforts to stabilize operations could shift this narrative.

What’s Next for Indian Aviation

The strong start to 2025 hints at a thriving year for Indian aviation. With fleet expansions—like Air India’s retrofits and IndiGo’s new A321 XLRs due this year—plus two new airports (Noida and Navi Mumbai) set to ease congestion, the sector’s on a roll. Add in rising passenger demand and competitive fares, and the skies look promising. Challenges like high fuel costs and supply chain hiccups linger, but India’s aviation story in 2025 is shaping up to be one of growth and grit.
