Indian graduates are gaining recognition as global leaders in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), with a 46.1% employability rate—the highest among all technical roles—according to a report by talent assessment firm Mercer Mettl. The study, based on data from over 2,700 campuses and one million learners, highlights India’s growing pool of AI talent and its emphasis on continuous skill development. While creativity sees a 44.3% employability rate, graduates excel in communication (55.1%), critical thinking (54.6%), and leadership (54.2%).
Graduates from Tier 1 institutions lead in employability at 48.4%, but Tier 2 and Tier 3 colleges are not far behind, showing potential in specialized technology roles. Regionally, Delhi boasts the highest employability rate at 53.4%, followed by Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. The report also notes gender parity in AI and ML, underscoring India’s inclusive approach to building a diverse tech workforce.
India’s contributions to AI go beyond talent. The nation has made significant strides across industries, leveraging AI to solve pressing challenges and drive innovation. In healthcare, AI-powered diagnostics and personalized treatments are addressing access barriers in rural areas. Companies like Citius Tech, Fitpass, and Zyla Health are leading efforts to use AI for health analytics and care management.
In agriculture, AI is helping farmers predict demand, monitor crop health, and optimize irrigation and pesticide use. Startups like Cropin and Fasal use satellite imagery and AI-powered recommendations to improve yields, while Digital Green employs large language models to analyze agricultural data.
Smart mobility is another area where India shines, with firms like Ather Energy developing integrated electric scooter systems and Sun Mobility advancing battery-swapping solutions. Startups such as Bounce Share are tackling first- and last-mile connectivity challenges.
Retail and manufacturing have also embraced AI, employing it for personalized customer experiences, predictive maintenance, and production efficiency. Companies like Shiprocket and Uptime AI are at the forefront, offering innovative platforms for logistics and cloud-based solutions for industrial operations.
The education sector is leveraging AI to enhance personalized learning, automate administrative tasks, and provide career-aligned curricula. Startups like Miko offer AI-powered companion robots for children, while iNurture focuses on job-oriented educational solutions.
India’s unique strength lies in its ability to generate grassroots AI use cases. Described as the “use case capital of the world” by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, the country’s technological advancements address challenges in agriculture, rural development, local governance, and urban planning. These innovations have global relevance, making India a hub for scalable AI solutions.
Additionally, India’s robust industry ecosystem positions it as a leading source for synthetic data, which is crucial for training advanced AI models.
