New Delhi — India is preparing to make its mark in the global artificial intelligence race, with plans to launch a domestically developed AI model as part of the India AI Mission. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the initiative, positioning the country as a competitor to leading AI platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and China’s DeepSeek.

The ambitious project, expected to take shape within the next 10 months, will be powered by a state-of-the-art computing facility equipped with 18,693 high-end Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). By comparison, DeepSeek AI operates on 2,000 GPUs, while ChatGPT was trained using 25,000. The significant investment underscores India’s commitment to building AI capabilities tailored to its unique linguistic and cultural landscape.

Vaishnaw emphasized that India’s AI model would prioritize indigenous languages, including Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and Bengali, ensuring accessibility for a wider population. “This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of an inclusive AI ecosystem,” he said, adding that startups will have access to the country’s newly established Common Compute Facility to develop foundational AI models.

The push for AI independence comes at a time when China’s DeepSeek R1 has stirred competition in Silicon Valley, raising concerns among U.S. tech giants such as OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. With its growing computational power and focus on localized AI solutions, India is positioning itself as a formidable player in the evolving AI landscape.
