New Delhi — India has signed a defense contract with Russia to acquire advanced anti-ship cruise missiles, a move that will bolster the Indian Navy’s submarine fleet and reinforce the country’s maritime security.

The deal, announced by the Ministry of Defence on Tuesday, underscores India’s commitment to modernizing its naval capabilities amid evolving regional security challenges. Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh was present at the signing ceremony in New Delhi.

“These missiles will significantly augment the combat capabilities of the Indian Navy’s submarine fleet,” the ministry said in a statement on social media.

India has steadily expanded its naval strength in recent years, investing in cutting-edge technology and international partnerships to enhance its maritime deterrence. The latest acquisition aligns with the country’s broader defense strategy, which prioritizes self-reliance while maintaining strong ties with key allies.

India has a coastline of 7,516.6 kilometers (4,670 miles), including the mainland and island territories. The mainland coastline alone is 6,100 kilometers (3,790 miles), stretching along the Arabian Sea in the west and the Bay of Bengal in the east.

With an extensive coastline and strategic interests in the Indian Ocean, India continues to fortify its position as a major naval power in the region. The new missile system is expected to provide the Navy with enhanced strike capabilities, ensuring greater security for its territorial waters and beyond.
