Hearing loss is a serious issue, affecting approximately 6 in every 1,000 children born globally, with India being no exception. For many families, the cost of cochlear implants — a device that restores hearing to those with severe hearing impairment — is simply too high. In India, the procedure can cost up to 10 lakh rupees (about 12,000 USD) for one ear.
However, Dr. Jubekar has made it his mission to help children who would otherwise remain unheard. After seeing an increasing number of patients, many from low-income families, he reached out to several NGOs for support. This collaboration has allowed him to offer surgeries and equipment free of charge to over 200 children so far.
“Every child deserves the chance to hear,” said Dr. Jubekar. The surgery, which is complex and requires skilled doctors, is usually accompanied by speech therapy to help children recognize sounds and words. Dr. Jubekar ensures that this therapy, which is critical to the child’s recovery, is also provided free of charge for up to a year.
The initiative has extended beyond Mumbai, as Dr. Jubekar has trained local doctors in rural areas to perform cochlear implant surgeries. Doctors in cities like Nagpur, Amravati, Yavatmal, and Surat are now also able to offer these life-changing procedures, making Dr. Jubekar’s impact far-reaching.
Early diagnosis of hearing impairment is crucial for the success of cochlear implants, with children between the ages of one and four showing the best results. However, many parents are unaware of the importance of early hearing screenings, often discovering the issue too late. To combat this, Dr. Jubekar has set up free hearing tests at his hospital in Chembur, offering early detection services to help parents address their children’s hearing issues promptly.
While cochlear implant surgery can be costly and complex, Dr. Jubekar’s work shows the power of collaboration and selflessness in overcoming financial barriers to healthcare. In a country where medical expenses can be a heavy burden, his initiative provides hope for families in need.
