MOSCOW — Russia is set to establish a naval base in Sudan, granting its fleet direct access to the Indian Ocean, a move with significant geopolitical implications, a security expert told the Russian news agency TASS.

The agreement, reached between Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Yousef Sharif and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, reportedly finalizes the terms of the base, though details on its timeline remain under discussion.

Alexander Ivanov, head of the Commonwealth of Officers for International Security, emphasized the base’s strategic importance. Positioned on the Red Sea, it would serve as Russia’s first naval facility in the region, enabling a direct maritime link between the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean, and the Atlantic. The Red Sea remains a critical corridor for global trade, particularly for oil shipments from the Persian Gulf.

The development underscores Moscow’s growing military footprint beyond its traditional sphere, as it seeks to bolster its presence in key global waterways.
