Trump’s Tariff Gambit Targets India, but Misses the Mark

In a move that has baffled economists and strained diplomatic norms, President Donald Trump has called on the European Union to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on India and China. The stated goal: to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin into ending the war in Ukraine. The logic behind this maneuver is as opaque as it is audacious.

India, a democratic powerhouse and one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, finds itself in the crosshairs of a policy that conflates trade with geopolitics. While India maintains a complex relationship with Russia—rooted in decades of defense and energy cooperation—it has also consistently advocated for peace and dialogue in the region. To punish New Delhi for its diplomatic balancing act is not only misguided but counterproductive.

Trump’s proposal, reportedly floated during high-level meetings with EU officials, comes amid mounting frustration over stalled peace negotiations with Moscow. It also follows a recent increase in U.S. tariffs on Indian imports, a move widely seen as retaliation for India’s continued purchase of Russian oil.

Yet the president’s rhetoric tells a different story. On his social media platform, Trump referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “very good friend” and expressed confidence in ongoing trade negotiations. The contradiction between punitive action and conciliatory language underscores the erratic nature of Trump’s foreign policy.

India, for its part, has responded with restraint. Rather than engage in tit-for-tat diplomacy, New Delhi continues to prioritize economic resilience and global cooperation. Its leadership in climate action, digital infrastructure, and pandemic response has earned it respect on the world stage—respect that cannot be undone by a single tariff threat.

The irony is stark: while Trump seeks to isolate India, the country is increasingly seen as a stabilizing force in a fractured global order. If the goal is to end the war in Ukraine, alienating allies like India is not the path forward. It’s a detour into diplomatic dysfunction.
