MALÉ, Maldives — President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu said he supports Major General (Retired) Moosa Ali Jalil as the new mayor of the capital. Speaking at an event at the PNC headquarters, the president said he had asked Moosa Jalil to run for the post because he wanted a mayor who would cooperate with the administration and help swiftly advance government initiatives and fulfill its promises to residents of the city.

President Muizzu said he personally encouraged the former military officer to seek the position, describing him as someone who would “cooperate” with the government and help “fast‑track” development efforts in Malé. He praised Moosa Jalil as “patriotic” and “sincere,” and said he was grateful that the retired general had agreed to contest the post. He also noted that housing units and land parcels approved under the previous administration had now been handed over.

The president used the event to outline progress on several major infrastructure, reclamation and housing projects, including the Rasmale development, which he said was advancing “at a fast pace.” A provisional list of plots earmarked for allocation is expected to be released in April, he said.

He added that dredging and land handovers across multiple sites — including Giravarufalhu and Gulhi Falhu — were moving quickly, with two additional dredgers positioned to begin work near Giravaru Falhu.

President Muizzu urged the public to avoid what he described as political disruptions, saying the country had “brought peace” and should not allow unrest to take hold. He called on voters to support candidates who would work constructively with the government.

The president said he planned to continue door‑to‑door campaigning ahead of the upcoming council elections, noting that he had done the same during his own tenure as mayor.

He also announced plans to restructure the Women’s Development Committees, saying the chairperson role would become a full‑time position and would be filled through direct elections. He endorsed Ustaza Aishath Alika Adnan, a candidate for the Malé committee presidency, calling her the most capable contender for the post.

President Muizzu concluded by appealing for public cooperation to advance development efforts in the capital.
