A major power‑generation agreement signed this week is expected to provide a long‑term solution to Addu City’s electricity shortages, with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu saying the project will secure reliable power for the next two decades.
The announcement was made during the launch of “The Greater Addu Vision”, where the President said Addu’s most persistent challenge has been the instability of its electricity supply. He said resolving the issue was one of his earliest priorities upon assuming office.
Under the agreement, five ABC 8DL36 generating sets — delivering a combined 26 MW — will be installed in Addu. The project is scheduled for completion by July next year.
The contract was signed between Definite Solutions L.L.C‑FZ, the authorised agent for the Maldives, and FENAKA Corporation Ltd, the state‑owned utility responsible for electricity, water and sewerage services across the islands. FENAKA Managing Director Major (Retired) Mohamed Najah signed on behalf of the corporation, while Abdulla Saeed, Founder and CEO of Definite Solutions, signed on behalf of the company.

The project, valued at USD 31 million, will utilise medium‑speed engines manufactured by Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC), a leading European engine producer based in Ghent, Belgium. ABC has over a century of experience in developing propulsion engines, power‑generation systems, and hybrid solutions for global energy and transport sectors.
According to ABC, the new generating sets will support the establishment of the Addu Central Power Station, enhancing Addu region’s energy security and improving service reliability for residents.
A previous contract for a new power plant in Addu had been awarded to China’s Dongfang Company.
“This agreement signed today will solve the electricity problem in Addu for the next 20 years,” the President said speaking an Addu City campaign function.
