President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said he will never take a proposal to the public if he believes it would harm the people or the country. He made the remarks last night while launching the details of “The Greater Addu Vision”.
Speaking about the proposed constitutional amendment to hold the presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day, the President said he would only support changes that serve the public interest. He said he backs the amendment because it carries several advantages.
The President noted that parliamentary elections are currently held just six months after the presidential vote. “Holding the two elections on the same day will increase voter turnout and ensure candidates are elected with the full support of the people,” he said. He added that such a change would prevent the difficulties faced by incoming governments during their early months in office.
Criticising the opposition MDP, the President said it was unacceptable to use parliamentary power to undermine the decision made by the people in the presidential election. He also accused the MDP of misleading the public by claiming the two elections were being merged.
The President stressed that the presidential and parliamentary elections are entirely separate processes and cannot be combined. A vote on the constitutional amendment is scheduled for the 4th of next month. The President said he would approve the amendment if the public supports it.
